Choosing art for one’s home can be overwhelming at times. There are several steps you can take , however, to make the process streamlined and an overall pleasant experience. Art is always in the eye of the beholder, but there are some technical elements that will help ensure success when choosing a piece. Here are 7 tips to aid in bringing the correct, and more importantly most beloved, art pieces into your home.

1. Picking the focal point, or points, means everything. You may want your room to have more than one area of interest, or you may want a single spot to draw attention. When choosing and placing the artworks, consider spacing to avoid a cluttered appearance.

2. Choosing the correct size is critical. Consider the space you want to fill and what size piece is needed to accommodate the area. Then, measure the dimensions of the wall or shelf. Take photos of the room to bring with you to the gallery so you can envision the piece in the space.

3. Look with an open mind. Paintings, sketches, and objects d'art are all lovely ways to decorate your space. Paintings will add color to a room. Sketches will add mood and theme. Objects d'art will bring depth and texture. Do not be afraid to mix modern with old world. Together, these two styles can dazzle a room.

4.  Consider content and context. Do you want to soften the room with human figures? Perhaps you simply prefer to mirror another object in the room by copying its lines and shape. If you love your coffee table and want to draw more attention to its shape, you should choose an object d'art that mirrors its silhouette. You may want to acquire a few pieces to bring the room together with color, either in wall art or objects d'art.

5. Color is the key element. Artwork should contain some of the eye-catching colors in your room. A few complimentary colors can also work well. Use the colors from a room’s pillows, curtains, rugs, walls, and throws to find inspiration.

6. Lighting and height add to the appeal of the artwork. A well-lit art piece is necessary. If poorly lit, it will disappear in the room. Never place artwork in direct sun light as it will fade paintings, dull sketches, and bleach sculptures. When hanging a work of art on a wall, the gallery standard is eye level, and the center of the piece should be 60 inches off the ground.

7. The last, and best, tip is this - buy art you love. Do not consider a rise in value or the name on the piece. The art is for you to love and enjoy for all the years to come.
